The Heart of Functional Occlusion

Functional Occlusion is the measuring tool for successful orthodontic treatment. It is made up of five definable goals.
  • Joint = Condyle — Proper Seating
  • Face = Symmetry and Balance
  • Perio = Healthy Mouth
  • Teeth = 6 Keys to Occlusion
  • Function = Right/Left Front/Back Movements

Understanding the effect an orthodontic treatment may have on the gnathic system exquisitely reinforces that we as clinicians can have an incredible influence on our patients. When functional occlusion is achieved, teeth are straight, facial esthetics are improved, the airway is not compromised, and the jaw is able to move freely without interference. Utilizing this philosophy allows the orthodontist to create a practice that is a win-win for all involved.

These goals are applied in pretreatment diagnosis and treatment planning.
Then again after treatment the same goals are applied. The orthodontist is now a student of their own work.
